Broadcast wrap-up: Bloomington-Kennedy vs. Minneapolis South

Another dominant performance by Minneapolis South in another game I had to call solo; one of my partners was a little too scared by the cold weather to drop on in. It wasn't my best performance this season, I miscalled the score twice as I had a hard time reading the scoreboard with protective fencing in front of it and miscalling a foul. Calling a game solo versus calling the game with a partner is a much different art to master

The game was close for a while. Both teams had a sloppy start, missing plenty of scoring chances and coming up short with lay-up opportunities, something that could've tilted the game either way. Instead, South used a big run in the 1st half to pull away and never look back. Kennedy looked like they had some life in the 2nd half, but South would have none of it. South held Shakila Boler, Kennedy's leading scorer, to 4 points. Alexis Holt led Kennedy players with 22 points.

For South, Tayler Hill had no trouble getting around the Kennedy defense to post a game high 25 points despite the absence of Taqouia Hammick, who has a knee injury, and one of their starters fouling out early in the 2nd half (Mallory Cramer). Ephesia Holmes chipped in with 19 points.

It looks like South has the shooting ability to work past a 2-3 zone, something that concerned me after the Benilde-St. Margaret's game, but they need to finish the easy looks to take the state title.

Broadcast wrap-up: Benilde-St. Margaret's vs. South

Tonight was the first game in my career that I had to call solo; amazing considering I have six friends and co-workers who have announcing experience and none of them were available because they were out of town, working, or for something else.

Fortunately, they didn't miss out on a good game; Minneapolis South methodically put Benilde-St. Margaret's away Friday night with a 56-34 win. However, BSM did expose a weakness in the South offense. You'll have to watch the game to find out. The broadcast will air soon.

Calling a game alone was a learning experience, to look at it positively. It emphasizes the value of getting interviews with coaches and players to break up the monotony of one announcer. Going solo also requires you to become a student of the game and make your own observations; there are no commercials at the bottom of the ladder to bail you out.
